Masters Represented at Boarding School Conference

With the goal of developing and strengthening professional skills and increasing the understanding of boarding school trends, a group of Masters faculty and administrators gathered in the heart of Washington, DC, for The Association of Boarding Schools’ (TABS) annual conference from Thursday, November 29, through Saturday, December 1.

In addition to gaining valuable insight from industry experts and peers, some of the Masters’ attendees also had an opportunity to impart knowledge and share their professional experience by leading some of the conference’s sessions.

Ethical Leadership Coordinator Lee Dieck presented with two colleagues from other schools about teaching leadership in boarding schools. Dean of Students Peter Newcomb, Director of Athletics Kevin Versen and Eileen Dieck presented on the collaboration between athletics and ethical leadership that resulted in Masters' Captain’s Training Program for varsity team captains.

"The best thing about going to a conference like TABS is having the opportunity to share ideas with people who are doing the same kind of work you are doing. By presenting what Masters has developed, we invite an exchange with those in other schools; that conversation makes all of us better at what we do," stated Dieck.

Ryan Wagner, Head Athletic Trainer and Health Teacher, shared best practices in concussion management in the boarding school setting; and Adriana Hauser, Director of Strategic Communications, presented on how to take advantage of the resources, research and knowledge provided by TABS to communicate the value of a boarding school education.

Head of School Laura Danforth, a member of TABS board of trustees, also participated in sessions on leadership and governance.

“I feel it is my responsibility to share the knowledge I’ve accumulated in my years of experience at boarding schools, and to learn all I can about this industry, so that I can better serve The Masters School,” remarked Danforth following her appointment to the board which kicked off on July 1, 2018.

Masters’ commitment to its residential life program is more evident than ever. The School recently announced an enriched seven-day boarding program and a new five-day boarding option starting in the fall of 2019.

Focusing exclusively on boarding school issues, the TABS conference provides an opportunity for educators to participate in professional development sessions and workshops on topics such as student health, leadership, enrollment, academics, residential life, diversity and multiculturalism.

TABS' main mission is to promote awareness and understanding of boarding schools, and to expand the applicant pool for member institutions. It is also a comprehensive, indispensable resource for educators who seek training, research, guidance and support on all issues pertaining to the residential school experience.
