The Masters School will be offering an inquiry-based exploration of the American Southeast during the second week of spring break.
"Beyond Regionalism: American Southern Cities Today" will take place from Saturday, March 16, 2019, through Saturday, March 23, 2019.
Building upon a years-long relationship with Jonestown, Mississippi, this trip will visit communities in the South with the goal of better understanding how the region functions in relation to other parts of the country. Questioning assumptions about race, class, and social structures, this trip will engage with communities in Jonestown, Mississippi; Oxford, Mississippi; and Memphis, Tennessee. This will be an inquiry-based trip that will ask students to think critically about issues such as how the music and cotton industries influenced the region, and how educational opportunities impact the region.
Some of the trip highlights will include volunteering with Sister Kay Burton in Jonestown, Mississippi, and visiting the National Civil Rights Museum, Graceland and Sun Studios.
The chaperones and trip leaders will be Mr. Browne and Ms. Hurley. The cost of the trip is still being determined. Please note that in awarding financial aid, priority will be assigned to students who have not before participated on trips. Students who are interested in this trip should send an email to MISH@mastersny.org describing why they are interested in participating in this trip and detail one question they would hope to explore while visiting the American Southeast. These responses must be received by Tuesday, December 11. More details will be available shortly.
