Boo It With Thy Might: A Festive Halloween at Masters

From Pac-Man to Minecraft, this year’s annual Halloween celebration was all fun and games.

In the Upper School, students, faculty and administrators entertained the crowd during a special assembly on Thursday, October 31, with humorous skits and performances based on the theme of video games.

Serving as emcees, class co-presidents Velizar Lazarov ’25 and Sophie Moussapour ’25 dressed up as Gru and Lucy, characters from the popular animated film “Despicable Me,” with many seniors dressing up as minions from the movie.

“Halloween is such a special tradition at Masters,” Moussapour said. “The way we fully commit ourselves as an institution to videos, skits or performances to gather and enjoy each other's creativity embodies our school values and the energy that makes Masters unique.”

Presentations included the Languages Department’s interactive riff on the Duolingo app, the eleventh grade’s recreation of Super Mario Kart, the Math Department’s inventive Just Dance contest and the Health and Wellness team’s take on The Sims that included a rousing singalong.

Rene Hurley, upper school science teacher and class of 2025 dean, appreciated the community’s engagement and enthusiasm. “I think the skits were well thought out and entertaining,” she said. “The groups stuck to their assigned themes and looked like they had fun with it.”

Right on cue and to the delight of the audience, middle school superheroes, skeletons and pirates paraded through the upper school assembly in the Fonseca Center gym. They then made their way to Estherwood for a celebration filled with sweet treats, music and fun. Head of Middle School Tasha Elsbach, who was dressed as a peace-loving hippie, enjoyed “the community spirit and creativity expressed in all the costumes.”

Moussapour reflected on the senior band’s finale as a special moment. “When we sang the final chorus of Michael Jackson's ‘Thriller,’ the black and orange balloons dropped from above and all of the seniors danced together, I couldn't help but get emotional,” she said. “This was our last Halloween at Masters, and we surely didn't waste it!”
