Embracing the theme of “On My Way,” 26 middle school performers in Preludes, the middle school musical theater troupe, delighted audiences during their annual concert.
Students from all four middle school grades took the stage in the Experimental Theater for shows on November 14 and 15. They sang and danced their way through seven songs from “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical,” “Violet,” “13: The Musical” and “Wonderland,” as well as one song by singer and songwriter Sara Bareilles.
Middle school performing arts teachers Jason Reiff and Katie Meadows co-directed the show.
“We had an especially large and enthusiastic group this year brimming with charisma, humor and generosity,” Reiff said. “It’s an annual gift to share this creative experience with these dedicated and passionate young artists.”
He was particularly impressed by the students’ dedication to their set — and to each other: “Their default mindset was attentive and committed to the work of refining their performances, sharing their creative ideas and encouraging one another along the way.”
A favorite song for Colleen Fitzmaurice ’30 was the opening number, “On My Way,” from “Violet.” “It had such a hopeful and light sound to it,” she said. “The choreography and lyrics are powerful and fun.”
Beyond the music, Fitzmaurice appreciates the community the Preludes group has fostered. “When I first started Masters, Preludes helped me make friends,” she said. “I have many people from grades above or below me that I can smile and wave to in the hallways. It is a great place to make yourself feel safe and welcome!”
Fellow seventh grade student Bee Fleming agreed: “Preludes feels like a family. After the 10 weeks we rehearse, everyone is so close, and you get to meet people from different grades who you wouldn't normally meet.”
For Meadows, who has worked with Reiff for years on the annual performance, one moment stood out among others: the curtain call. She said, “The students look so confident and proud of their hard work as they took a bow and thanked their families, friends and teachers for coming to support them.”
