Historic Day on the Course for Roberson

Varsity golf captain Spencer Roberson ’24 made history in a match against Greenwich Country Day School on Tuesday, April 16.

Roberson, armed with a 4-iron, scored an incredible hole-in-one on Ardsley Country Club's 226-yard second hole. It marked the first ace in program history.

"I hit a 4-iron, and I tried to cut it since the green slopes from right to left and I am left-handed," Roberson said of the miraculous shot. "I hit a bit of a pull and I had no clue it (went in), so it was really a shock. In fact, I couldn’t find my ball so I grabbed my club and started to walk back to the tee to hit a second ball and the GCDS player actually told me it was in."

Roberson was unsure if he was the first golfer to ace the No. 2 at Ardsley CC, however, he had an interesting tidbit about the hole and its difficulty.

"I do know that my dad’s friend hosts a charity event at Ardsley that offers a Porsche as a prize for a hole-in-one on hole 2, and nobody has ever made one in that tournament, so I think it is pretty rare," he said.

The multi-sport athlete, who also competed on Masters' varsity basketball squad this past winter, finished up with a score of 37 over nine holes to earn the low medal round. It tied the program's previous all-time low round that was originally set by Erin Kopf ’15 at New Haven Country Club in 2015.

"To be honest, I was kind of surprised, but I feel like I finally played up to my standards for an entire round, as it has been a bit of a disappointing season for me this year," Roberson said. "However, I feel like my iron play and wedge play were finally on point and I can use that momentum to keep scoring well in the rest of our matches and hopefully break that record at some point!"

Varsity golf coach Greg Schlapp highlighted Roberson's commitment to the sport as the reason for his success.

"When it comes to golf, I would say Spencer is a golf fanatic," Schlapp said. "He absolutely loves the sport and has the internal drive, determination and commitment required to improve his skills. His golf accomplishments are clearly achieved through hard work and practice."

The Panthers were back at Ardsley CC for a match against visiting King on Tuesday, April 30. Rohan Patel ’25 scored the squad's low round with a 44.

"Rohan has clearly improved from last year," Schlapp said. "I would attribute his improvements to hard work, lessons and practice."

Masters will square off against Harvey in its next match on Tuesday, May 7.
